Talk it Through with Someone Who Gets It, Privately
You may not feel safe talking openly with those closest to you. Or perhaps you’ve only sought support from people who can’t fully understand your experiences. They might have misunderstood, minimized, or questioned the reality of what you’re going through.
People of color like you are turning to the Racial Equity Support Line because it’s free, confidential, and answered by people of color.
You can call us to talk about issues like:
Prejudice and Discrimination
If you’ve felt mistreated in public spaces like shopping, dining, or banking, you are not alone. These encounters and microaggressions can highlight how others are treated differently than you. They can make you feel isolated and erode your confidence.
Prejudice and discrimination can also happen at work, where you may face overt or covert racism from colleagues and superiors that can reduce your job satisfaction and lead to burnout.
You deserve to feel safe and supported. Call us to share your experiences, receive validation, and find solidarity with another person of color who stands with you: 503-575-3764.
Loneliness and Isolation
Experiencing discrimination, social exclusion, cultural misunderstandings, or a lack of representation can lead to deep feelings of loneliness and isolation. Feeling like you’re going through something alone can make it difficult to function and can negatively impact your health.
Speaking with someone who understands your unique experiences can provide comfort, reduce stress and anxiety, and give you a sense of belonging.
You deserve to feel connected. Call us to connect with another person of color who is ready to listen, understand, and support you: 503-575-3764.
Family or Friend Expectations and Dynamics
Managing relationships with your family and friends can be challenging when expectations don’t align. Whether it’s career pressures, dating someone from a different culture, facing unrealistic family standards, or raising children, these dynamics can create stress and confusion that are difficult to sort out on your own.
Seeking outside sources of support like therapy or counseling can be difficult when those close to you dismiss your feelings by saying things like:
- “You’re just being dramatic.”
- “Just get over it.”
- “Why do you need a counselor? We take care of ourselves.”
- “Why do you need therapy? Only weak people get therapy.”
You deserve someone you can count on. Call us to talk about what’s going on with a person of color who understands: 503-575-3764.
Exploring Identity
Navigating cultural expectations can be overwhelming, especially when you feel pressured to act or sound a certain way. If you’ve been pressured to be “less white” or more of a certain color, or if you’ve been pushed to pursue culturally accepted goals, you might be feeling conflicted, disconnected, or unsure of what to do next.
Seeking acceptance while feeling out of place can be isolating. Constantly adjusting to meet others’ expectations can erode your confidence and sense of self.
You deserve to be accepted and feel confident in who you are. Call us to openly explore your feelings and identity with a person of color who will support, not judge: 503-575-3764.
Immigration Concerns
When your immigration documentation is unresolved, you may feel unsure or afraid of where and how to access necessary services like healthcare, legal support, housing, education, and other community resources.
Waiting for resolution or being afraid of who you can trust takes a toll on your mental health and well-being. We do not offer legal advice, but we’ll do our best to connect you to the resources you need.
You deserve to have your needs met no matter your immigration status. Call us to confidentially share what you’re going through and connect to resources: 503-575-3764.
Family Separation
Being separated from your family, especially children, due to immigration or relationship challenges can be traumatic. The guilt and sadness you experience for leaving loved ones behind or being apart for long stretches of time can be overwhelming.
Constantly worrying about your family’s safety and well-being can harm your mental health and ability to function each day.
You deserve a safe space to process and heal from fear and stress. Call us to discuss concerns about your family situation and discover ways to manage intense emotions: 503-575-3764.
Differing Beliefs or Hot Button Issues
Discussing certain topics with family or friends can lead to conflict and strained relationships. When beliefs differ, it can be hard to talk openly without risking arguments that harm valuable relationships or leave you feeling isolated.
You deserve a safe space to talk about sensitive topics. Call us to voice your perspectives without fear of conflict or judgement and get support navigating relationships: 503-575-3764.
Finding Validation
It’s disheartening when your ideas and feelings are dismissed, leaving you afraid to speak honestly. This can make you question whether your perceptions are accurate and if your thoughts are valid. Feeling misunderstood repeatedly can erode your confidence and make you doubt your own experiences.
Have you ever wondered if you’re seeing things clearly or questioned whether your thoughts are real? It’s natural to feel uncertain when no one seems to understand what you’re going through. Sometimes, we all need to talk it through with someone who can reassure us that our observations and feelings are genuine and important.
You deserve to feel understood, affirmed, and acknowledged. Call us to express what you’re going through and for reassurance that your experiences are real and important: 503-575-3764.
Coping with Trauma
Experiencing or witnessing race-based violence or harassment can leave deep emotional scars, making you feel isolated and unsafe. These incidents can affect your mental well-being, causing constant anxiety and fear.
Racial trauma can happen in various settings, from public spaces to the workplace, creating an environment where you feel on edge and overwhelmed.
You deserve mental and emotional healing after traumatic experiences. Call us to talk through your experiences, the impact of trauma, and ways to find healing and security: 503-575-3764.
Language Barriers
Talking about mental health is challenging, and trying to do so in a language you’re less comfortable with can make it even harder. Miscommunication and misunderstandings can prevent you from getting the support you need, leaving you feeling frustrated and alone.
You deserve support that is tailored to your needs. Call us to express yourself clearly and comfortably in your native language: 503-575-3764. English and Spanish-speaking counselors are available. Interpreters are provided for other languages.
